This is a supportive and informative group for expectant parents to connect with each other and build their village. We have a themed discussion and guest speaker each week to support you through your pregnancy, labour and transition to parenthood.

It’s FREE and there’s no need to book (except for first aid sessions).

Let’s talk nappies! How to choose them and how to use them
Laura Moss, Kendal Parent Network

This week we will be talking about all things nappies! How to choose them and how to use them. We’ll discuss the pros and cons of disposable vs reusable, look at different types of nappies and talk through how to use, wash and reuse cloth nappies.

Laura is a mum of three and cofounder of Kendal Parent Network.

How to tell if your baby is getting enough milk
Ann Bruce, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and Breastfeeding Counsellor, South Cumbria Breastfeeding Support

Ann is passionate about supporting families to meet their breastfeeding goals and has run free breastfeeding support groups in South Cumbria for the last 13 years. 

Kendal Town Council has awarded funding for South Cumbria Breastfeeding Support, in collaboration with Kendal Parent Network, to deliver monthly antenatal breastfeeding workshops as part of the Bump Start programme. Each session will have a specific focus, chosen based on Ann’s experience of supporting local parents to breastfeed. 

During this session, Ann will focus on how to tell if your baby is getting enough milk, but will happily answer any questions you have on feeding your baby – whether with breast, bottle or anything in between.

Breastfeeding challenges: how to avoid them and how to solve them

Ann is passionate about supporting families to meet their own breastfeeding goals and has run free breastfeeding support groups in South Cumbria for the last 13 years.

During our session on Wednesday, Ann will focus on breastfeeding challenges; how to avoid them and how to solve them. Many parents want to breastfeed but find it much more difficult than they expect. The more you can learn about breastfeeding before your baby comes along, the higher your chances of reaching your own breastfeeding goals, whatever they may be.

Though this topic will be our focus, Ann will happily answer any questions you have on feeding your baby – whether with breast, bottle or anything in between.

Coping with strong emotions as a new parent
Kate Miller, Kendal Parent Network

Becoming a new parent is a huge life change and experiencing a range of strong emotions is normal. You may notice that your baby has some strong emotions to deal with too!

This session aims to help prepare you for the highs and lows of parenting a newborn. We will explore the different emotions you might experience and discuss different tools and techniques for dealing with strong emotions – both yours and your baby’s.

Understanding newborn sleep
Emma Martlew, Flo to Sleep

Emma is a baby sleep specialist and founder of Flo to Sleep, supporting families with a gentle, responsive and evidence-based approach to infant sleep.

During this session, Emma will talk about the biology of newborn sleep, what to expect in the first weeks and months, and what is considered normal when it comes to night-time waking. She will explore how feeding, attachment and the fourth trimester influence sleep, as well as recognising tired cues, safe co-sleeping, contact naps and calming a crying baby.

Emma will also bust common sleep myths, explain why strict schedules and wake windows can be misleading, and share ways to support your baby’s natural rhythm while coping with sleep deprivation and looking after your mental health.

Safer sleep and everything you need to know about baby sleep products
Lisa Joyce, Folk & Thread

Lisa Joyce is a Kendal based designer with over 25 years’ experience of designing and developing baby products.

As well as winning over 50 product design awards, Lisa sat on both the British and European safety standard steering committees and is considered one of the UK’s leading experts in baby sleep products. Working with brands in the UK, Australia and the US, Lisa has a wealth of knowledge she will be sharing with us.

In 2024 she co-founded a new baby sleep brand, Folk & Thread, and is working in partnership with The Lullaby Trust, the UK’s leading charity promoting safer sleep for babies. During this session, Lisa will be sharing Lullaby Trust literature and advice specifically around choosing baby products, what to look out for and what to avoid, whether they are brand new, gifted or second hand.


25 March
Baby brain development, bonding with bump and 24 hour clock
Sharon and Kay, South Lakeland Family Hub

South Lakeland Family Hub is a new service provided by Westmorland & Furness Council. This service replaces the Children’s Centres formerly run by Action for Children.

During this session, Sharon and Kay will tell you about the services they offer at the Family Hub. They will share some information about how your baby’s brain develops. You will also get tips for bonding with your bump and preparing for life as a new parent.

Antenatal education
Daisy Jefferys, Bundle of Joy

Daisy is a practising NHS midwife and founder of Bundle of Joy, offering no-fluff, evidence-based antenatal education. Her sessions are practical, inclusive and designed to help you feel confident and prepared for birth, baby and beyond.

During this session, Daisy will introduce what antenatal education can cover — from understanding labour and birth to caring for your newborn and navigating the early days of parenthood. You’ll have the chance to ask questions and pick up real-world tips in a relaxed and supportive space.
